Stage 2 — Drain and sediment removal. Drain to the lowest practical level via the outlet plus a submersible pump. Wet vacuum on overheads, manual scoop plus suction line on sumps. The first 2-3 inches is diagnostic — colour and texture flag tanker-heavy supply (Sindh dust, micro-sand, iron staining) or contamination from a degrading lid. In a Block 5 villa overhead uncleaned for two years we routinely lift 3-5 litres of grey-brown sludge from a 1,000-gallon Dura tank.
Stage 3 — Mechanical scrub (lid, walls, base, outlet pipe). Stage 5 — Bti tablet drop and lid reseal. After rinse and refill to a 0.2 ppm tap residual, a Bacillus thuringiensis israelensis (Bti) tablet goes into every overhead during dengue season (May-November). Bti Cry endotoxins bind to Aedes aegypti mid-gut receptors and kill larvae within 24-48 hours; non-toxic to humans, mammals and fish at potable dosing (WHO Class III). One tablet per 1,000 litres for 30 days. Lid resealed — gasket replaced if hardened, overflow pipe checked for mesh cap, bolts torqued.
Overhead tank vs underground sump — different jobs
Underground sumps. Block 1-3 bungalows typically run a 1,000-2,000 gallon concrete or RCC sump plus a booster pump filling the overheads. Sumps are confined spaces: pre-entry gas check (concrete accumulates CO2 and depleted O2), forced ventilation 15-20 minutes before entry, 12V lighting, spotter outside the manhole, breathing apparatus on standby. Sediment runs 2-4× an equivalent rooftop — we routinely lift 8-12 litres of sludge from a 1,500-gallon Clifton sump uncleaned for 18 months. Total time 50% longer than a rooftop of the same size.
Overhead tanks. Block 4 and Block 5 apartment buildings run two or three 1,000-1,500 gallon Dura or Nexa polyethylene tanks; Block 1-3 bungalows usually a single overhead. Polyethylene is easiest — smooth, non-porous, standard 30-minute hypochlorite dwell. Galvanised steel (older Khayaban-e-Roomi villas) needs a softer brush. Older fibreglass needs crack inspection. The last 2-3 inches sit below the outlet by design, so we bring a separate suction line.
Block 4 and Block 5 multi-tank buildings. No staggering — residual biofilm in any uncleaned tank re-inoculates the cleaned ones via cross-feed within 7-14 days.
