Why Karachi curtains get dirty faster than most
Karachi sits in a particular crossroads of climate and culture that loads window treatments harder than most cities. The dust season runs from April through June, with airborne particulate concentrations regularly exceeding WHO guideline thresholds by 5-10x — and most of that dust enters homes through windows. The monsoon brings 60-90% humidity from June to September, which lets biological soil — mould spores, bacterial particulate, dust-mite allergen — settle into curtain fibres and reactivate every time the humidity cycles up. Salt-air in coastal Clifton, Bath Island, and DHA Phase 8 accelerates fabric degradation and leaves a fine chloride deposit that attracts dust further. Joint-family homes mean more cooking aerosol drifting toward kitchen-adjacent windows, more incense and agarbatti residue around prayer-room windows, and more cigarette smoke residue in the drawing-room drapes where male guests sometimes step out for a smoke and the smoke drifts back through the window screen.
The soil profile on a Karachi curtain
The deposit on a typical drawing-room curtain after 12-18 months of Karachi exposure is, by mass: about 50% mineral dust (silica, gypsum, traffic carbon), 20-25% lipid residue (cooking aerosol, candle and agarbatti soot, skin oil from handling), 10-15% biological matter (dust-mite allergen, mould spores, bacterial particulate), 5-10% chloride and sulphate salts from coastal air, and the remainder a mix of insect fragments, fibre breakdown, and dye-bleed from sun exposure. Each fraction responds to a different chemistry — and unlike a sofa, which is fixed in place, a curtain can sometimes be taken down and washed off-site under fully-controlled conditions, which lets us deploy more aggressive chemistry safely.
How our curtain cleaning service works: three methods
On-site steam cleaning
For curtains that cannot easily come down — heavy lined drapes with complex rod systems, motorised tracks, top-of-the-window mounted treatments in double-height drawing rooms, or any case where the homeowner needs same-day completion — we steam-clean in place. Our portable steamer delivers dry steam at about 100°C at the nozzle, which sanitises the fabric, kills dust-mites (which die at sustained temperatures above 60°C), and loosens surface soil without saturating the fabric. We follow the steam with a HEPA-vacuum pass to capture the loosened particulate before it redeposits. On-site steam is faster and cheaper than take-down but does not extract embedded soil as deeply — it is the right method for routine refresh cleaning every 6-9 months, not for the once-every-two-years deep restoration.
Off-site cleaning for heavy drapes and shrink-prone fabrics
For the deepest clean we take the curtains down, tag them by window, and choose the process by fibre. Dimensionally stable fabrics (polyester and most polyester blends, including sheers) go through a low-agitation wash with mild alkaline detergent at pH 8-9 and water at 30-40°C, followed by a pH 5.5-6 acidic rinse for brightening and residue removal; sheers get a non-ionic surfactant at pH 7 and almost no agitation. Shrink-prone fibres (linen, silk and silk blends, viscose, wool, cotton that has not been pre-shrunk, and interlined drapes) go to solvent dry cleaning instead, because solvent does not swell the fibre and so does not pull the panel shorter. Washed curtains dry on flat racks under fan circulation, never tumble-dried, to preserve drape and length. Total turnaround is typically 3-5 days for standard drapes, 5-7 days for silk and embroidered pieces.
Ultrasonic and brush cleaning for blinds
Blinds are not curtains. Wooden venetians, faux-wood, aluminium horizontal blinds, and vertical office blinds all have different cleaning protocols. For dense slat accumulation we use ultrasonic cleaning — submersion in a tank that generates high-frequency sound waves to dislodge soil from every surface simultaneously, including the underside of each slat that hand-cleaning cannot easily reach. For wooden venetians we use a damp-cloth method with a pH-neutral cleaner, never submersion, because water swelling will permanently warp wood. Vertical office blinds usually clean in place with steam and a wide brush attachment. Motorised and Roman blinds get a careful disassembly-and-reassembly protocol that we time conservatively, because the mechanism complexity varies by manufacturer.
What we use — chemistry, equipment, and credentials
Detergent selection
Our curtain wash uses amphoteric surfactants — cocamidopropyl betaine — as the primary surfactant, with non-ionic cocamide DEA for the lipid fraction. For sheers we drop to fully non-ionic to avoid any residual charge that attracts re-soiling. Alkaline boost from sodium carbonate at pH 8-9 for heavy drapes; strict pH 7 neutral for delicates. The acidic rinse at pH 5.5-6 closes the cuticle on natural fibres, brightens colours, and strips any remaining alkaline residue. The single most common mistake in cheap curtain cleaning is skipping the acidic rinse — the alkaline residue stays in the fibre, attracts soil from the air, and the curtains look dingy again within weeks of cleaning.
Steam and extraction equipment
On-site steam goes through portable steamers delivering dry steam at about 100°C at the nozzle. That suits polyester and other stable drape fabrics; silk and other heat-sensitive natural fibres are not steamed in place, they come down for off-site cleaning. HEPA vacuum recovery on every steam job captures the loosened particulate at 0.3-micron filtration efficiency, which is the size range where dust-mite allergen and mould spore live. For asthma and allergy households — common in Karachi given our air load — the HEPA step is the reason the cleaning helps the household, not just the appearance.
Antimicrobial pass when needed
For curtains in rooms recovering from illness, or in homes with chronic respiratory issues, or in any case where the client requests sanitisation, we add an antimicrobial pass after cleaning. BTC (benzalkonium chloride 0.13%) and DDAC (didecyldimethylammonium chloride 0.06%) cover broad-spectrum bacteria, enveloped viruses, and most fungi. For curtains in prayer rooms where agarbatti smoke residue is the primary soil — and where any residual smell matters — we finish with a 3% hydrogen peroxide treatment which oxidises the soot compound and leaves no residue. Our 4-step curtain cleaning process
Step 1: Inspection, fibre identification, take-down assessment
The technician identifies the fabric (cotton, polyester, linen, silk, velvet, blackout-lined, embroidered) and assesses the rod system to decide on-site versus off-site. We do a colour-fastness test on an inconspicuous corner with a damp white cloth before committing to a method, and we photograph the curtain in place so we can hang it back identically. Existing damage — sun-fading, hem fraying, stitch loss, holes — gets documented up front. This step takes 15-20 minutes per room and prevents the most common dispute, which is the client noticing damage after re-hanging and assuming we caused it.
Step 2: Take-down (or in-place preparation) and dry-soil removal
For off-site jobs, take-down is methodical — rings counted, hooks bagged, weights catalogued, lined panels rolled rather than folded to prevent crease damage. For in-place jobs we extend the curtain fully, vacuum thoroughly with a HEPA upholstery attachment, and tap-shake to release loose dust. On a dust-storm-season curtain this step alone removes 30-40% of total soil mass. Wet-treating over un-vacuumed dust converts the dust into mud streaks inside the fabric, which is the single most common cause of "the curtains looked worse after cleaning" complaints.
Step 3: Wash or steam treatment
For off-site washing: pre-treatment of identified stains with appropriate chemistry, immersion in fabric-matched detergent at fabric-safe pH and temperature, controlled agitation, two rinse cycles, final acidic rinse for residue removal and colour brightening. For on-site steam: pre-spot of identified stains with appropriate spotter, steam pass at about 100°C with overlapping coverage, HEPA vacuum recovery to capture loosened particulate, repeat steam-and-vacuum on heavily-soiled sections.
Step 4: Drying, pressing, and rehanging
Off-site curtains dry on flat racks under fan circulation, with careful tension management to preserve drape and length. Embroidered pieces dry shaded to prevent UV colour shift. Lined drapes get an interlining check — if the inner lining shrank differently from the face fabric, we adjust before pressing. Pressing on a low-heat setting for fabric type, with seam alignment and crease restoration. Re-hanging uses the original hardware in the documented configuration, with full-length drape adjustment so the curtain breaks correctly at the floor. For in-place steam jobs, we use air movers under high humidity and confirm dry-to-touch before leaving.
Karachi-specific stains and soils
The most common deep soil on a Karachi drawing-room curtain is agarbatti and candle soot near the prayer area, cooking aerosol near the kitchen window, and cigarette smoke condensate where guests have smoked nearby. Each responds best to alkaline pre-spray with a solvent component for the lipid fraction. Paan splatter on a curtain — yes, this happens — is acidic and tannin-heavy, treated with an alkaline tannin remover. Mehndi splash from wedding preparation is plant-dye chemically bonded by the time we see it; significant lightening is possible, full removal usually not. Turmeric splash from cooking accidents responds to peroxide-glycerine treatment. Salt-air discolouration on coastal-area curtains needs deionised-water rinse, because tap-water salts make the problem worse. Sun-bleached strips along the leading edge of a south-facing or west-facing curtain cannot be reversed by cleaning — that is permanent fibre damage from UV. We tell clients in advance when we expect partial rather than full results.

A standard cotton-blend drawing-room set with 4-6 panels in moderate condition sits in the lower end of the residential range. Lined drapes, velvet, and large panel sets are mid-range. Booking around Eid and wedding season
Curtain demand peaks in the two weeks before Eid-ul-Fitr, Eid-ul-Adha, and through November-February wedding season. Off-site cleaning needs a 5-7 day lead time during peak periods, so book 14-21 days ahead of any event where the curtains need to be back up and pressed. How to maintain curtains and blinds between deep cleans
Vacuum curtains monthly with the upholstery attachment, paying attention to the top hem where dust accumulates first and the bottom hem where pet hair and floor dust collect. Shake out blinds weekly with a microfibre duster. Keep windows closed during dust-storm days (April-June) and during heavy traffic-pollution episodes. Run AC dehumidify mode during the monsoon to keep indoor humidity below 60%, which suppresses biological soil deposition. Avoid hanging fresh-cooked food in rooms with drapes — the aerosol travels further than most people realise. Do the curtains have to come down?
Usually not. Polyester and other stable fabrics are cleaned in place with a HEPA vacuum pass and dry steam, so the room is usable the same day. Curtains come down when the fibre is shrink-prone (linen, silk, viscose, wool, interlined drapes), when the soiling is too heavy for on-site work, or when a lining needs to be seen flat.
How hot is the steam, and is it safe for every fabric?
Steam leaves the nozzle at about 100°C. That is right for polyester drapes and dust-mite control, but it is the wrong process for silk and other heat-sensitive natural fibres, which we take down for off-site cleaning instead. The fibre test on a hidden hem decides which route your curtains take.
Do you clean blinds as well as curtains?
Yes. Aluminium venetians can go through ultrasonic or wet cleaning; real wooden venetians are cleaned with a barely-damp cloth and never submerged, because water warps the slats; vertical office blinds are usually cleaned in place. Motorised and Roman blinds are taken apart and reassembled carefully.
