Pest control spray, also called disinfestation or general spray, lays a residual insecticide along the routes crawling insects use: skirting, door and window frames, pipe entries, drain covers, cupboard corners and the outside of boundary walls. Ants, spiders, silverfish, crickets, earwigs and the occasional cockroach crossing the treated surfaces are killed for weeks after the visit. It is a quick, low-disruption treatment for homes, offices and shops that want routine protection rather than a full fumigation.

Disinfestation is not disinfection. Disinfestation removes insects. Disinfection kills germs on surfaces, after an illness or for hygiene. If you need surfaces sanitised, see our disinfection services in Karachi. This page is about insects.

What a pest control spray treats

Insect Treated by general spray? If the problem is heavy
Ants Yes Ant control with gel bait at the nest
Spiders, silverfish, crickets, earwigs Yes —
Cockroaches crossing treated routes Yes Cockroach gel treatment for kitchen infestations
Mosquitoes and flies Partly, on resting surfaces General fumigation adds a cold fog
Termites, bed bugs, rodents No Their own programmes

Spray, fumigation or gel: which do you need?

You have… Best treatment
A few kinds of crawling insects, and want routine protection Pest control spray
A mix of crawling and flying insects across the whole home General fumigation
Many cockroaches in the kitchen Gel treatment
One pest in large numbers (termites, bed bugs, rats) A targeted programme for that pest

Spray works on the surfaces it is applied to, and on insects that cross them. That makes it the right tool for keeping insects out and down, and the wrong tool for an established colony hiding inside walls and appliances. Our guide to fumigation and spraying explains the difference in more detail.

How a spray treatment runs

  1. Walk-through. We ask where you see insects and look at how they get in: gaps under doors, pipe entries, drain covers, cracked skirting and window frames.
  2. Outside first. A residual band along the outside of boundary walls, around drain covers and at the base of the building, so insects meet the treatment before they come inside.
  3. Entry points. Door and window frames, gaps around pipes and cables, and ventilators.
  4. Indoor routes. Skirting, under sinks, behind appliances, cupboard corners and storerooms, the edges insects travel along, not open floors or surfaces you touch.
  5. Re-entry and aftercare. We tell you when it is safe to return to each area and how long to avoid mopping the treated skirting.

Preparing for the visit

  • Put food and utensils away and cover open water containers.
  • Move items off the floor along the skirting in the rooms to be treated.
  • Keep children, pets and anyone with breathing problems away from treated rooms until we say it is safe.
  • Cover aquariums and switch off their air pumps.

After the treatment

Insects that cross the treated surfaces are killed over the following days and weeks, so activity falls gradually rather than all at once. Do not mop or wash the treated skirting and frames for the time we advise, because that removes the residual layer. Outdoor bands last less long in the monsoon, when rain washes treated surfaces.

Routine spray for offices, shops and residential buildings

Offices, shops, schools and building common areas use pest control spray as routine protection on a schedule, usually every month or every quarter, done after hours so nobody is disturbed. Scheduled visits are recorded, which matters for landlords, building committees and businesses that need to show pest control is being done. See our commercial pest control programmes and monthly contracts. Food businesses usually need more than spray: a documented IPM programme.

Price

Pest control spray is quoted after a walk-through, because the price depends on the covered area, the outdoor perimeter, the number of kitchens and bathrooms, and whether it is a one-off or a scheduled contract. For a whole-home treatment that also covers flying insects, see general fumigation prices, which start from PKR 3,500 for a one-bedroom flat.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is disinfestation?+

Disinfestation is the removal of insects and other pests from a property, usually with a residual spray along the routes they use. It is different from disinfection, which kills germs on surfaces. Disinfestation deals with ants, spiders, silverfish, crickets and similar crawling insects.

What is the difference between disinfestation and disinfection?+

Disinfestation removes insects; disinfection kills bacteria and viruses on surfaces. They use different products and solve different problems. For sanitising after an illness or for hygiene, you need disinfection services, not a pest control spray.

How long does a pest control spray last?+

The residual layer keeps killing insects that cross treated surfaces for weeks after the visit, as long as the skirting and frames are not mopped or washed. Outdoor bands wear off sooner in the monsoon. Offices and shops usually repeat the spray monthly or quarterly.

Is pest control spray safe at home?+

The spray is applied along skirting, frames, pipe entries and outdoor walls, not on open floors or surfaces you touch or prepare food on. You need to stay out of the treated rooms for a few hours, and we tell you the exact re-entry time on the day. Children, pets and anyone with asthma should return last.

Will a spray get rid of cockroaches in my kitchen?+

A spray kills cockroaches that cross the treated surfaces, but a kitchen infestation hides inside appliances, hinges and voids that spray does not reach. For kitchen cockroaches, gel bait works far better.
