Why gel beats spray for kitchen cockroaches
Spray treats the surfaces it touches and the cockroaches that happen to cross them. Most of a German cockroach colony never crosses an open surface: it stays inside hinge gaps, behind the cooker, under the sink, inside appliance motors and in the hollow legs of furniture. Many common sprays are also repellent, so cockroaches that sense them move deeper into the walls and the next flat.
Gel works the other way. It is placed exactly where the cockroaches already go, it does not repel them, and it kills slowly enough that a cockroach returns to the colony before it dies. Cockroaches eat each other's droppings and dead bodies, so one treated cockroach carries the active to others that never touched the bait. The chemistry, and why we rotate it
Our standard gel is fipronil 0.05%, applied as small spots of roughly 0.25 to 0.5 grams each. Spots that small are invisible once placed in a hinge or crack, and there is no smell.
Cockroaches that are exposed to one active for long enough can become less sensitive to it, and German cockroaches breed fast enough for that to happen within a few seasons. So we rotate between gel actives, indoxacarb, hydramethylnon and fipronil, depending on what the site has been treated with before. On a contract site, the rotation is planned and recorded.
How a gel treatment runs
- Inspection. We look for droppings, egg cases, shed skins and live cockroaches to map where the colony is concentrated. A torch and a few minutes behind the cooker tell us more than any question.
- Clean-out of competing food. Grease and crumbs compete with the bait. We point out the spots that need cleaning, and we ask that you avoid spraying any shop insecticide before or after, because it repels cockroaches from the gel.
- Placement. Small gel spots inside hinges, cupboard corners, under the sink, behind and under appliances, around pipe entries, in electrical switch-plate gaps where safe, and in furniture joints. Never on open surfaces or where food is prepared.
- Drain and entry treatment. Where American cockroaches are coming in, we treat drains and floor traps as well.
- Follow-up. We check the result and top up placements where activity continues.
What to expect after treatment
You may see more cockroaches in the first few days, often in daylight. They are affected cockroaches leaving their hiding places, which is a sign the gel is working. Activity usually falls sharply within one to two weeks as the effect spreads through the colony.
Do not wipe away the gel spots, and do not spray insecticide over them. If you deep-clean the kitchen, tell us, so we can replace any placements that were removed.
Keeping cockroaches from coming back
Most re-infestations in Karachi flats come from outside the flat: cartons from the market, second-hand furniture and appliances, and neighbouring flats connected by shared drains and pipe gaps. A few habits make a big difference:
- Unpack grocery cartons at the door and throw the cardboard out the same day.
- Keep drain covers and floor traps closed, and pour water into dry floor traps weekly.
- Seal the gaps where pipes pass through kitchen walls.
- Store food in sealed containers and do not leave dishes out overnight.
