Cold storage is a strange environment to defend. The product core of a refrigerated or frozen warehouse — the racking held at 2–4°C for chilled goods, or -18°C to -25°C for frozen — is one of the most hostile places on earth for an insect. At those temperatures metabolism stalls, reproduction stops, and stored-product beetles simply cannot complete a life cycle. So operators sometimes assume a cold store barely needs pest management at all.
That assumption is exactly where the trouble starts. The cold core does not eliminate pest pressure; it displaces it. Every pest that would otherwise spread across an ambient warehouse instead concentrates in the warm zones that ring the cold envelope — the loading docks, the ante-rooms and vestibules, the insulation voids inside panel walls, and the machinery and motor rooms that run hot around the clock. In Karachi's climate, with high ambient humidity and a summer that pushes 40°C outside the dock doors, that temperature gradient is severe, and pests read it precisely. Our job is to manage the perimeter, not the freezer.

Why the pest map inverts in a cold store
In an ordinary dry warehouse, pest activity is fairly evenly distributed and driven by the product itself — Tribolium castaneum (rust-red flour beetle) and other stored-product insects living inside sacks of grain, flour or spice. Chemistry and phosphine fumigation target the commodity.
A cold store inverts this map. The commodity is inert; the structure is the habitat. Three things pull pests to the warm perimeter:
- Warmth. Refrigeration is inefficient somewhere by definition — every joule pulled out of the cold room is dumped as heat at the condensers, compressors and motor rooms. Rodents seek exactly this warmth in winter.
- Insulation cavities. Sandwich-panel walls and suspended ceilings enclose large, dark, undisturbed voids that hold a stable mild temperature. For Rattus norvegicus (Norway rat) these voids are ideal nesting real estate — quiet, warm, and hidden from both staff and daylight.
- The dock as a doorway. Every pallet in and out crosses the loading dock, and every dock door is a breach in the thermal and pest envelope. Flies, moths and rodents enter here, riding inbound pallets or simply walking through a door held open during a long load.
Understanding this inversion is the whole game. Spraying the cold room is pointless and non-compliant; the pests are not there. The programme has to be built around the warm ring.

Exclusion first: the dock is the battle
For a cold store, exclusion is not one tool among many — it is the primary control. Get the dock right and most of the pressure never enters. Our team assesses and specifies:
- Strip curtains and air curtains at every dock and personnel door, sized to the opening, so the thermal and physical barrier holds even while a door is technically open.
- Door discipline — the operational habit that no dock door stays open longer than a load requires. We build this into the site's standard operating procedure and reinforce it during staff training, because the best air curtain in Karachi cannot beat a roller door propped open for an hour in July.
- Dock-edge and dock-leveller seals to close the gap between the trailer and the building — a classic rodent entry point that inspections routinely miss.
- Two-stage vestibule design where possible, so no single door opens directly from the outside into a temperature-controlled space.
Exclusion is followed by proofing of the structure itself: sealing cable and pipe penetrations, service ducts, and panel joints where Mus musculus (house mouse) can enter a void. Monitoring, not blanket chemistry
Inside the product-handling envelope, the guiding principle is simple: no chemical treatment in or near product zones. Cold-chain goods are frequently food, pharmaceutical or export cargo, and there is no acceptable pesticide residue on them. So the programme relies on monitoring and interception rather than spraying.
- Perimeter rodent stations. Tamper-resistant bait stations around the external perimeter and in the plant rooms, mapped and numbered, checked on a fixed schedule. Where a live catch is the goal near sensitive zones, we favour mechanical or non-toxic monitoring stations over rodenticide, keeping bromadiolone [1] and brodifacoum [1] to the outer defensive ring only.
- Insulation-void and plant-room monitoring. Discreet monitoring in the voids and motor rooms where nesting actually occurs, so we detect activity before it becomes an infestation behind a panel wall.
- Insect light traps (ILTs). Positioned in ante-rooms and dispatch areas — never directly at a dock opening, where they would draw insects in from outside — to intercept flying insects that breach the door.
- Ambient staging areas. Where goods are held at ambient temperature before chilling or after dispatch, occasional stored-product insects such as Tribolium castaneum can appear. These zones get pheromone monitoring rather than treatment of the cold store itself.

Moisture and condensation: the quiet driver
Karachi's humidity makes condensation a permanent management issue in cold storage. Wherever warm humid air meets a cold surface — around doors, on evaporator coils, at panel joints, in drainage channels — you get standing moisture. That moisture supports fly breeding, fungus gnats, and drain-dwelling Blattella germanica (German cockroach) in the warm ante-rooms and plant rooms.
Our surveys therefore always include drainage integrity, condensate management, and evaporator drip-tray hygiene. Fixing a blocked floor drain in a vestibule often removes a fly problem that no trap would have solved. Where cockroach activity is confirmed in plant rooms or drains, we use targeted Fipronil [2] 0.05% gel bait applied strictly within those non-product technical areas — never in storage or handling zones.
How this differs from ambient-warehouse fumigation
It is worth stating plainly, because the two services get confused: cold storage pest control is not fumigation. Ambient dry-goods warehouses holding grain, pulses, spices, rice or similar commodities are treated with phosphine gas fumigation under sheets or in sealed chambers — a scheduled, whole-commodity gassing that kills stored-product insects inside the product. A cold store is the opposite case. The cold itself does the insect suppression that phosphine would otherwise do, so there is no fumigation of the frozen or chilled cargo. Instead the entire effort is exclusion, structural proofing and perimeter monitoring around the warm ring. A vendor who arrives at a cold store proposing to fumigate the freezer has misread the facility. The right programme is quiet, documented, and almost entirely non-chemical inside the envelope.
Documentation for export and food-safety audits
Cold stores in Karachi frequently serve export supply chains and food-safety regimes, which means the pest-management programme is judged as much on its paperwork as on its results.
