Why Karachi Dengue Pressure Is Specific
Karachi Dengue Vector
Aedes aegypti is the primary dengue vector across Karachi. It is a day-biter, with peak feeding windows 0700-0900 and 1700-1900 — which is why dengue exposure happens at the breakfast table or just before maghrib, not at night when most people assume "mosquito time" is. Flight range is short, typically 100-400 metres from the breeding site, which means the mosquito biting you was almost certainly born in your own compound or a neighbour's. Aedes albopictus is a secondary vector, more bold-striped and more tolerant of peri-urban habitat, increasingly present along the agricultural fringe.
The Sindh Health Department reports peak case-load August through October, correlating with the Aedes breeding peak of July through September that follows monsoon water accumulation. This is a sharp seasonal curve, and operating decisions — when to start, how often to re-treat, when to stop — follow that curve.
Geographic Pattern
Historical case incidence has been higher in Lyari, Korangi industrial fringe, and Malir agricultural fringe — denser housing, more open water-storage practices, more peri-domestic breeding habitat. Historical incidence has been lower in DHA and Clifton, where construction density and water-tank covering practices reduced Aedes breeding pressure.
That gap is closing. Recent monsoon seasons have shown rising DHA and Clifton case-load driven by two specific drivers: undeveloped plots holding monsoon rainwater for weeks, and AC condensate from split-unit drip lines pooling in trays and along compound walls. North Nazimabad has been a persistent historical hotspot — older bungalow stock, open roof tanks, and community-level breeding pressure no single household can solve alone.
Distinguishing From Other Mosquito Issues
Three different mosquito genera matter in Karachi, and the dengue protocol is not the same as the malaria protocol or the nuisance-mosquito protocol. Aedes aegypti is the day-biter and the dengue plus chikungunya vector. Anopheles stephensi is a night-biter and the urban malaria vector. Culex quinquefasciatus is a night-biter, the dominant nuisance mosquito and a filariasis vector. Treatment chemistry overlaps significantly, but emphasis differs: dengue control prioritises container-breeding source reduction because that is where Aedes aegypti lives. Malaria control prioritises ground-pool and drain treatment because that is where Anopheles lives. A blanket fog hits all three but solves none of them.
How Adult Dengue Spray Alone Fails
Fogging kills the adult mosquitoes airborne when the fog is released. It does not penetrate water surfaces where eggs and larvae are developing. Aedes aegypti eggs hatch in 2-5 days when wetted, and larvae develop to adults within 7-10 days in warm Karachi conditions. Without larvicide on breeding sites, you are back to baseline mosquito population within a week — and the household is back to assuming "the spray didn't work" when in fact the spray did exactly what spraying does.
The protocol that actually breaks the Aedes cycle requires five layers running in sequence:
- Source reduction — cover, empty, or drill drainage in standing-water containers.
- Bti tablets in containers that cannot be eliminated (roof tank, septic vent, ornamental pool).
- ULV indoor cold fog during peak weeks, to kill resting adults inside the home.
- Outdoor perimeter spray to kill foraging adults in the garden and along compound walls.
- Re-treatment at 30-day cycles through peak season, because residuals fade and Bti tablets dissolve.
Fogging without source reduction is symptomatic treatment. It does nothing for tomorrow's mosquito, which is why families call us back three weeks after a single-visit fog and ask why the bites are back.
The Full Protocol We Run
Phase 1: Breeding-Site Survey (30-45 min)
Free of charge for premises larger than 5,000 sqft. A trained technician walks the property logging every potential Aedes aegypti breeding site: roof water tanks, AC drip trays and condensate lines, plant pot saucers, blocked gutters, water-meter boxes, pit latrines, septic vent stacks, rooftop sumps, ornamental pools, and disused buckets in side yards. Each site is GPS-tagged in our logbook so the same technician returns to the same containers on follow-up visits.
Phase 2: Source Reduction
Empty and dry where the owner can keep the site dry. Cover roof tank lid and screen the vent with fine mesh. Drill 2-3mm drainage holes at the base of any container that cannot be inverted. Clean blocked gutters. Replace cracked AC condensate lines so water exits onto soil, not into a tray. The owner is walked through the reduced-site list at the end of the visit so the household knows which containers must stay covered.
Phase 3: Bti Larvicide on Monitored Sites
For standing water that cannot be eliminated, we apply Bti tablets — Bacillus thuringiensis israelensis, a biological larvicide specifically toxic to mosquito and black-fly larvae via gut-enzyme disruption. Bti is safe for fish, pets, and humans because the toxin is only activated by the alkaline gut chemistry of dipteran larvae. One tablet treats roughly 50L for 30 days. For roof water tanks used as drinking water, we use Methoprene briquets (Altosid) — an insect growth regulator that prevents larvae from molting to adult, lasts 150 days per briquet, and is rated drinking-water-safe at recommended dose per WHO guidance.
Phase 4: Indoor ULV Cold Fog
We use an IGEBA UL5 ULV fogger (backup Vectorfog C100+) with natural pyrethrin. ULV (ultra-low-volume) cold fog produces 5-20 micron droplets that stay suspended in air for 30-60 minutes, reaching ceiling-air junctions, curtain folds, and behind-furniture spaces where adult Aedes rest during the heat of the day. Re-entry is 30 minutes after fog clears. Natural pyrethrin breaks down rapidly in sunlight and has low residue, which makes it appropriate for occupied homes during peak season — including homes with infants, elderly residents, or chemotherapy patients where synthetic residuals are not appropriate.
Phase 5: Outdoor Perimeter Spray
Cypermethrin 10% EC along the compound wall base, garden vegetation, and the garbage collection area — 4-6 week residual against foraging adults. For larger commercial compounds and serviced apartment blocks, we use Lambda-cyhalothrin for extended residual (8-10 weeks). Outdoor spray is scheduled away from pollinator foraging hours — dusk or after dark — because pyrethroids are toxic to bees when sprayed on flowering plants during foraging windows. This is not optional; it is how we keep pollinator pressure off our clients' gardens.
Phase 6: Follow-Up + Documentation
Day-15 follow-up call to the household. Bti tablet refresh at 30 days through peak season. Every visit generates an ISO 9001:2015 logbook entry: date, technician name, chemistry used, batch number, GPS-tagged sites treated, and any new breeding sites discovered. This logbook is what hospital procurement, school principals, and HSE auditors look at when they audit our contracts.
Karachi Neighborhood-Specific Notes
DHA Phase 6-7-8
Newer construction with substantial undeveloped plot inventory holding monsoon water for weeks. Roof tank and AC drip-tray treatment is the priority. Tall compound walls trap stagnant air and concentrate Aedes density at house level.
Clifton Block 1-9
Less ground-level breeding than older neighbourhoods, but Block 5-9 carries rooftop ornamental pool pressure and serviced-apartment AC drip-tray load. Building-level treatment — all flats on a single visit — outperforms unit-by-unit work.
Bahria Town
Garden and compound perimeter focus. Larger plot sizes mean more standing-water sites per home — plant saucers, hose coils, pool covers, decorative urns. Source-reduction walkthrough runs 45-60 min versus 30 min in apartment stock.
PECHS + Bahadurabad
Older bungalow stock mixed with commercial-residential conversions. Mosque wuzu containers nearby are a major breeding source — clean, still water refilled daily is exactly what the species prefers. Building-level treatment including any adjacent mosque is the realistic protocol.
North Nazimabad
Historical hotspot, Block A through W. Roof tanks and AC drip trays priority. Community-level breeding pressure means single-household treatment without neighbourhood coordination has limited effect — we recommend bundled treatment across adjacent compounds where possible.
Malir + Korangi
Higher historical case incidence driven by agricultural-fringe (Malir) and industrial-fringe (Korangi) habitat. Monthly treatment through peak season, not single-visit. Larger compound size and more peri-domestic breeding habitat.

What about my roof water tank — is the chemistry safe in drinking water?+
Methoprene briquets at recommended dose are drinking-water-safe per WHO guidance and are what we use on tanks supplying household drinking water. Bti tablets are not the right formulation for drinking-water tanks — we reserve those for AC drip trays, ornamental pools, septic vents, and any other standing water not used for drinking.
How often during dengue season?+
For residential homes: monthly Bti refresh plus monthly adult fogging through Aug-Oct. For institutions (school, hospital, mosque, large compound): weekly Bti site checks plus monthly fogging and outdoor residual.
Will fogging kill bees?+
Pyrethroid is toxic to bees if sprayed on flowering plants during foraging hours. We schedule all outdoor perimeter spray for dusk or after dark, when pollinators are not foraging. Indoor ULV fogging is contained inside the building and does not affect outdoor pollinator populations.
What if a family member already has dengue?+

Dengue spray aur machar spray mein farq kya hai?
Dengue spray targets Aedes aegypti, which breeds in clean standing water in containers and bites in daylight — so the work is built around finding and treating that water, with fogging timed to the morning and late-afternoon activity peaks. General machar spray usually targets Culex, the night biter from drains, and leans on residual barriers instead. Same chemistry family, different targeting, and asking for one while getting the other is the most common mismatch we are called in to correct.
Dengue spray ke baad kitne din tak asar rehta hai?
The fog itself is a knockdown — hours, not weeks. What holds is the larviciding and the residual on resting surfaces, which run roughly three to four weeks.
