"Fumigation" in Pakistan is used for three genuinely different jobs, and the difference matters because they use different chemistry, different exposure times, different equipment, and different paperwork. At one end is residential space treatment — a technician fogging a home with a low-toxicity aerosol that is dry and safe to re-enter within the hour. At the other is true structural fumigation — a sealed warehouse or grain stack filled with phosphine gas for several days, a job that is lethal if handled by an untrained operator and that ends only with a written re-entry clearance certificate. Calling both "fumigation" is why so many Pakistani buyers pay for the wrong service or hire the wrong operator. This page is the national explainer: what fumigation really is, the three distinct jobs it describes, the actives behind each, and how to tell a legitimate operator from a Facebook-Marketplace sprayer. We are Nest Fumigation Services (NFS), founded by Saad Danish in Karachi; the framework below holds anywhere in Pakistan, and we say plainly at the end where we actually operate.
What Fumigation Technically Means
Strictly speaking, true fumigation is treatment with a fumigant — a substance that acts in the gas phase, filling a sealed space so the toxicant reaches every crack, void and grain kernel that a liquid spray never could. Phosphine, sulfuryl fluoride and methyl bromide are real fumigants. In everyday Pakistani usage, though, "fumigation" has stretched to cover almost any professional pest treatment, including the ultra-low-volume (ULV) fogging of homes that is technically a space spray, not a fumigation. Both meanings are in daily use, so the honest thing is not to argue over the word but to be clear about which of the three jobs you actually need. That is what separates a fair quote from a padded or a dangerous one.
The Three Genuinely Different Fumigation Jobs
1. Residential ULV space treatment
This is what most Pakistani households mean by "getting the house fumigated" — a broad-spectrum knockdown of cockroaches, mosquitoes, ants, silverfish and spiders. A technician applies an ultra-low-volume aerosol of a synthetic pyrethroid such as deltamethrin, cypermethrin or lambda-cyhalothrin, usually with a targeted fipronil [1] gel bait (around 0.05%) placed in kitchen cabinets for German cockroach (Blattella germanica), plus a perimeter spray along skirting and entry points. These actives sit in WHO Hazard Class II (moderately hazardous) and are applied at dilute label doses; the treated surfaces are dry and safe to re-enter in roughly 30 to 60 minutes. It is the lowest-toxicity, fastest-turnaround job of the three, and it is what the vast majority of homes and small offices actually need. When you see this treatment priced in the low thousands of rupees, that is correct — the cost is mostly labour and warranty, not chemistry.
2. Commercial recurring AMC
Restaurants, food factories, warehouses, clinics, schools and offices don't have a one-off pest problem; they have a standing regulatory and reputational exposure that a single visit cannot fix. The answer is an Annual Maintenance Contract (AMC): scheduled recurring visits — weekly, fortnightly or monthly — combining ULV space treatment, gel baiting, perimeter spraying, rodent bait-station service, and a documented pest-activity log kept on site for audit. The chemistry is similar to residential work but the documentation is the product: treatment records that satisfy a Sindh Food Authority [2] (or provincial equivalent) inspection, an ISO 9001 quality audit, or a franchise landlord's compliance file. For food businesses this is not optional — it is how they pass inspection and protect a licence. AMC is a service structure, not a different chemical, but it is a genuinely distinct job because the value is continuity and paperwork, not a single kill.
3. Structural and commodity fumigation (phosphine / sulfuryl fluoride)
This is fumigation in the true sense, and it is a different profession from home fogging. Stored grain, pulses, rice, tobacco, spices and other commodities in godowns are sealed under gas-tight sheeting and dosed with phosphine — released from aluminium phosphide tablets that react with atmospheric humidity — held for 72 hours to several days, then aerated and cleared before anyone re-enters. Phosphine is cheap per dose and remains the default commodity fumigant across Pakistan, but it is highly toxic to humans and demands calibrated gas detection, sealed exposure, and a mandatory aeration period; residual concentrations must fall to a safe level (well under 0.3 ppm, verified with a detector) before re-entry. Sulfuryl fluoride (marketed as ProFume or Vikane) is the premium alternative — faster, residue-free on treated commodities, and effective against drywood termites and beetles where phosphine struggles — but materially more expensive. Methyl bromide, once the universal commodity and container fumigant, is now phased out under the Montreal Protocol and legally restricted to narrow quarantine-and-pre-shipment use. This tier is where the word "fumigation" carries real danger, and where operator competence is not a preference but a safety requirement.
How to Choose a Legitimate Fumigation Operator in Pakistan
The single biggest risk in this market is not price — it is hiring an operator who cuts the dose or skips the safety stage. Four checks separate a real operator from a Marketplace sprayer, and they cost you nothing but a few questions.
Registration and credentials. Ask for a registered business, and for the credentials the job actually requires. General pest control should come from a firm with recognised memberships — for example the Structural Pest Management Association (SPMA) and the Pakistan Pest Management Association (PPMA), and ideally ISO 9001:2015 quality certification. For commercial and food-safety work, ask whether their treatment records will satisfy a Sindh Food Authority inspection or an ISO 9001 audit.
Named active ingredients and dose. A legitimate operator will tell you exactly what they are applying — the product name, the active ingredient, and the dilution or dose rate — because they have nothing to hide. "Special medicine" or a refusal to name the chemical is the clearest warning sign in the market. For a commodity fumigation, ask the dose in grams per cubic metre and the exposure hours; for a home visit, ask the product and whether a warranty callback is included in writing.
Documentation. Every serious job should end with paper: a written treatment record naming the product and dilution for residential work; a gas-concentration log and a re-entry clearance certificate for phosphine; a pest-activity log and audit-ready records for a commercial AMC. If an operator can't produce the relevant document, they either didn't do the job to standard or can't prove they did.
Safety discipline, especially on gas work. For any structural or commodity fumigation, the non-negotiable questions are: how is the space sealed, how is gas concentration monitored, what is the aeration period, and who signs the re-entry clearance. Operators who shortcut aeration to hand a warehouse back faster are the ones behind the fatal phosphine incidents that surface in the news. A firm that treats these steps as optional is one to walk away from.
What Fumigation Costs Across Pakistan
Fumigation cost in Pakistan spans an enormous range precisely because the three jobs are so different. A one-off residential ULV visit is a low-thousands-of-rupees service — the cost is labour and warranty, not chemistry. A commercial AMC prices as a monthly retainer. Commodity phosphine fumigation prices per cubic metre of sealed stack volume, and a large godown job runs into the hundreds of thousands. Because the variables — area versus volume, exposure hours, active ingredient, and documentation — move each job on a different axis, no single national price is meaningful. Rather than publish national figures we can't stand behind for every city, we keep our real, working PKR ranges on our Karachi cost reference, where the numbers come from actual invoices. See our fumigation cost in Karachi 2026 guide for type-by-type PKR bands, and our pest control prices in Karachi 2026 reference for the full cross-service picture. Wherever you are in Pakistan, use the operator checks above to judge whether a quote is honest, and treat any figure far below the market as a signal that something — dose, safety stage, or certificate — is being cut.
Where NFS Operates
NFS is a Karachi-based operator. We run residential, commercial and commodity fumigation across Karachi — DHA, Clifton, Gulshan-e-Iqbal, Gulistan-e-Jauhar, PECHS, Bahadurabad, North Nazimabad, and the industrial belt around Korangi, SITE and Landhi. This page is the national-level explainer of how fumigation works in Pakistan, not a claim to service every city. If you are in Karachi and want to book, our fumigation services in Karachi page covers scope, scheduling and the inspection-backed protocols, and general fumigation covers the standard home and office ULV service. If you are elsewhere in Pakistan, use the four checks above — registration, named actives, documentation, and safety discipline — to choose a competent local operator.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between fumigation and pest control?+
Pest control is the broad category — any method of managing pests, including baiting, trapping, spraying and exclusion. Fumigation, strictly, is one method within it: filling a sealed space with a toxic gas (a fumigant) so it penetrates everywhere a liquid can't. In everyday Pakistani usage "fumigation" has stretched to mean almost any professional pest treatment, including the ULV fogging of homes that is technically a space spray. The practical point is to be clear which of the three jobs you need — a home fog and a sealed-godown gas treatment are both called fumigation but are entirely different services.
Is fumigation safe for a home in Pakistan?+
Standard residential fumigation — a ULV fog of a WHO Class II pyrethroid at a dilute label dose — is safe when done by a competent operator, and the treated surfaces are typically dry and safe to re-enter within 30 to 60 minutes. The genuinely hazardous jobs are structural and commodity gas fumigations with phosphine, which are for sealed, unoccupied spaces only and require professional monitoring and aeration. For a full safety walkthrough covering pets, children, pregnancy and re-entry times, see our dedicated fumigation safety page.
What chemicals are used for fumigation in Pakistan?+
It depends on the job. Home and office ULV treatments use synthetic pyrethroids (deltamethrin, cypermethrin, lambda-cyhalothrin) plus fipronil gel bait for cockroaches. Commodity and structural fumigation uses phosphine (released from aluminium phosphide tablets) as the workhorse, with sulfuryl fluoride as the premium alternative for timber and high-value stock. Methyl bromide is largely phased out under the Montreal Protocol and restricted to narrow quarantine use. A legitimate operator will always name the exact active ingredient and dose — a refusal to name the chemical is the clearest warning sign.
How do I choose a good fumigation company?+
Check four things: a registered business with relevant credentials (SPMA, PPMA, ISO 9001); a willingness to name the exact active ingredient and dose; written documentation appropriate to the job (treatment record, gas log, re-entry clearance, or an audit-ready AMC pest-activity log); and clear safety discipline on any gas fumigation — sealing, monitoring, aeration and a signed re-entry clearance. An operator who can't or won't do these is one to avoid, regardless of how low the price is.
How much does fumigation cost in Pakistan?+
There is no single national price because the three jobs price on different axes — residential per visit, commercial per monthly retainer, and commodity per cubic metre of stack. A legitimate one-off home ULV visit is a low-thousands-of-rupees service; commercial and commodity jobs run far higher. Rather than quote figures we can't stand behind nationwide, we publish real, invoice-based PKR ranges on our fumigation cost in Karachi 2026 guide, which is a fair reference point anywhere in Pakistan.
