The single biggest mistake we see in Karachi homes — across Defence, Clifton, PECHS, Bahadurabad, North Nazimabad — is treating a German cockroach kitchen colony with American cockroach chemistry, or the other way around. The two species behave nothing alike, live in different parts of your home, and the chemistry that controls one will actively make the other worse.
We get calls every week from clients who have been spraying supermarket pyrethroid sprays nightly for months, watching the problem spread room by room, convinced "the roaches are getting stronger." They aren't. The chemistry is wrong for the species, and the colony is fragmenting away from the spray, not dying.
Around 90% of Karachi residential infestations are one of two species: the German cockroach (Blattella germanica) or the American cockroach (Periplaneta americana). Spend three minutes learning to tell them apart and you'll save weeks of failed treatment. This guide is the species-ID companion to our complete cockroach control guide.
At-a-Glance Species ID Chart
| Feature | German cockroach (Blattella germanica) | American cockroach (Periplaneta americana) |
|---|---|---|
| Size | 12-15 mm | 35-40 mm |
| Color | Light tan with two dark parallel bands behind the head | Reddish-brown with a yellowish figure-8 pattern on the head shield |
| Flying | No (wings rudimentary, not functional) | Yes — glides short distances, especially June-September |
| Harborage | Kitchen, dishwasher gasket, fridge compressor housing, microwave keypad, under-sink void, cabinet hinges | Floor drains, sewer vents, garbage chutes, exterior compound walls, mosque wuzu drains |
| Breeding rate | Highest of any cockroach — 30-40 nymphs per ootheca, 4-5 oothecae per female lifetime | Slower — around 16 nymphs per ootheca, 6-14 oothecae per female |
| Ootheca | Light-brown, around 9 mm, carried by female until just before hatch | Reddish-brown, around 8 mm, glued to a surface and abandoned |
| Smell | Sweet musty aggregation pheromone in kitchen cabinets | Mild musty in garbage and drain zones |
| Typical Karachi location | PECHS, Bahadurabad, North Nazimabad kitchens; any restaurant kitchen citywide | DHA and Clifton ground-floor apartments near sewers; mosques; restaurants near open drains |
| Right treatment | Non-repellent gel bait (indoxacarb or fipronil [1]) + IGR — NO indoor spray | Residual perimeter spray at drain entry points + bio-drain treatment + exterior cypermethrin |
If you remember nothing else: small + tan + kitchen = German; large + reddish-brown + bathroom drain = American. Now to the detail.
Section 1: German Cockroach — The Indoor Specialist
Blattella germanica is the species responsible for almost every chronic, multi-room, "we just can't get rid of them" kitchen infestation we deal with in Karachi. It is strictly indoor — it does not live outside in Karachi's climate. Once it gets inside a home or restaurant, it does not leave voluntarily.
A single German cockroach lives 100 to 200 days. In that time a female produces 4 to 5 oothecae, each carrying 30 to 40 nymphs. Unlike most cockroaches, she carries the ootheca attached to her abdomen right up until hatch, which means the eggs are protected from most surface treatments. A single pregnant female that arrives in a grocery bag in March can produce a kitchen-wide infestation by July.
How does it get in? Almost always passively. The vectors we see most often in Karachi:
- Used appliances bought second-hand — fridge, microwave, oven — carrying a colony inside the compressor housing or motherboard cavity.
- A returning suitcase from a hotel stay. The cockroach hides in a seam, comes home, walks into the kitchen.
- Grocery bags from a market where the cockroach was already in the cardboard cartons.
- Wall-void or pipe-chase migration from a neighboring flat. Extremely common in PECHS, Bahadurabad, and Clifton apartment blocks where multiple kitchens share a common drain chase.
German cockroach is the hardest species to control for three reasons. Gregarious behavior means thousands of individuals share a few tight harborages — any treatment that disturbs that cluster breaks it into smaller satellite clusters. The reproductive rate is so high that even 90% mortality leaves a viable breeding population. And decades of pyrethroid spraying has selected for genuine insecticide resistance in urban populations worldwide — including Karachi.
When our technicians arrive on a suspected German cockroach job, the diagnostic checks are specific and quick:
- Under the sink, around the P-trap and below the dishwasher — look for clusters of dark pepper-grain frass on horizontal surfaces.
- Behind the fridge compressor housing — pull the fridge out 30 cm. The warm, dark, slightly humid compressor cavity is the single most common German cockroach harborage in Karachi homes.
- Microwave keypad and control panel — the warm electronics cavity is an ideal harborage. Open the door, look at the underside of the control panel.
- Cabinet hinges — especially upper cabinets above the stove. Frass accumulates in the hinge pocket.
- Dishwasher door gasket — pull the gasket back and look at the warm void behind it.
If we find evidence in two or more of these zones, we know we're dealing with an established colony, not a "I saw one last week" situation, and the treatment plan changes accordingly.
Section 2: American Cockroach — The Sewer Migrant
Periplaneta americana is the species most Karachi residents picture when they hear the word "cockroach" — the large, glossy, reddish-brown insect that comes up through the bathroom drain at night. It is a fundamentally different animal from the German cockroach in habitat, behavior, biology, and required treatment.
American cockroach is semi-outdoor. It lives 12 to 18 months — five to six times longer than a German cockroach, and spends most of that life cycle in sewer systems, storm drains, garbage areas, and the moist exterior environments around buildings. It enters Karachi homes opportunistically, not as a permanent resident.
The migration pattern that drives most of our American cockroach service calls is highly seasonal. From July to September, post-monsoon saturation of Karachi's underground sewer network forces populations upward — they cannot survive submerged, they migrate up through floor drains, sewer vent pipes, and broken manhole covers. The neighborhoods hit hardest are the ones with the highest density of ground-floor units sitting directly above an old or compromised sewer line: DHA Phases 1-6, Clifton Blocks 1-9, older PECHS bungalows, parts of North Nazimabad. Upper-floor apartments rarely have a chronic problem — the migration physics don't favor them.
The entry points we look for on inspection are specific:
- Floor drain perimeter — kitchen, bathroom, utility area. The grate is often broken, missing a corner, or sitting on a cracked concrete lip. Frass accumulates in the millimeter of gap.
- Sewer vent caps — exterior wall, usually at ground level. A missing or cracked cap is a direct sewer-to-air conduit and a nightly entry route.
- Mosque wuzu (ablution) drains — for clients with houses adjoining mosque perimeter walls, this is a major source we sometimes have to coordinate with the mosque management to address.
- Garbage chute floor — multi-unit buildings. The chute base is a cockroach city.
- Compound wall expansion joints at ground level — especially in DHA and Clifton where compound walls have not been sealed at the base.
We document every entry point with a photo on the job sheet. American cockroach is mobile — they will use a different drain next week if you only treat one, so the inspection has to be comprehensive even if the client only saw one cockroach in one location.
Because Periplaneta americana is long-lived and reproduces more slowly than the German species, you won't see explosive 10x growth in a month. What you will see is steady weekly migration from an external source pool you cannot fully control. That's why the treatment is fundamentally about the perimeter and the entry point, not the colony inside — there is no permanent colony inside in most cases.
Section 3: The Critical Treatment Difference
This is the section we wish every Karachi homeowner read before they bought their first can of supermarket spray. Mismatched chemistry is the single most common reason cockroach problems get worse, not better, after "treatment."
Wrong approach 1: Spraying German cockroach
When you spray a German cockroach kitchen with a pyrethroid product — cypermethrin, deltamethrin, the active ingredients in essentially every consumer-grade spray sold in Karachi — the chemistry actively repels them. Pyrethroids were designed for outdoor crop pests, and target insects detect the chemistry and avoid treated surfaces. For German cockroach, this is catastrophic.
The cockroaches scatter from their cluster harborage under the sink into wall voids, ceiling cavities, and adjoining rooms you can't easily reach. The colony fragments into multiple breeding centers, each continuing at the species' normal extreme rate. Six weeks later the client calls us saying "we sprayed every night for two months and now we see roaches in the bedroom too — they're spreading." They are not "stronger." The chemistry pushed them outward.
The correct approach is a non-repellent gel bait. Our standard protocol uses Indoxacarb 0.6% Advion gel as the primary and Fipronil 0.05% Goliath gel as the secondary rotation. Cockroaches do not detect either active ingredient on contact, so they freely feed on the placements. They carry the active back to the harborage in their gut, defecate, and are eaten by other colony members through normal coprophagy and necrophagy. The result is cascading mortality — one feeding cockroach can kill dozens through secondary and tertiary transfer. We never spray inside a German cockroach kitchen.
Wrong approach 2: Gel-baiting American cockroach
The mirror-image mistake. Gel baits work brilliantly on German cockroach because the species clusters in one to three harborages within ten meters of a food source. American cockroach, by contrast, forages over hundreds of square meters. The individual that walked across your kitchen floor at 2 AM may have come from a sewer chamber 40 meters away and may not return for two weeks. A gel placement on your kitchen counter is essentially invisible to that population.
The correct approach for Periplaneta americana is a residual spray applied at the entry points. Our standard product is Deltamethrin 2.5% WG K-Othrine, applied as a residual perimeter band around floor drains, sewer vent caps, and compound wall bases. Every cockroach migrating through picks up active ingredient. Residual remains bioactive on porous surfaces for 8-12 weeks even in Karachi conditions. Paired with a bio-drain treatment that removes the biofilm food source inside the pipe itself, you remove both the attractant and the route.
Why the mix-up happens
Almost every cockroach product sold to consumers in Karachi — supermarket sprays, pet-store chalk, hardware-store powder — is a pyrethroid formulation marketed as "all-purpose roach killer." None distinguish species. The chemistry is the wrong tool for German cockroach and only a partial tool for American (which needs a perimeter strategy, not a kitchen-floor spray).
The result is that German cockroach infestations worsen month over month while the homeowner believes they are "treating" the problem. By the time we get the call, the colony has fragmented into four or five satellite harborages and the job takes three weeks instead of one.
Section 4: How NFS Diagnoses Which Species You Have
Our standard species-ID visit takes about 15 minutes and follows a sequence we've refined over hundreds of jobs:
-
Where do you see them? Kitchen and food storage = German. Bathroom floor, washroom, around floor drains, garage, garbage zone, exterior compound = American. This first question alone resolves about 70% of cases.
-
Daytime or nighttime activity? German cockroach seen during the day signals an overcrowded colony — the harborage is full, individuals are being pushed out. American cockroach seen during the day around a sewer zone is normal foraging.
-
Size and color at first sighting. Small (under 20 mm), tan, two dark parallel bands behind the head = German. Large (over 30 mm), glossy reddish-brown, figure-8 on the head shield = American.
-
Ootheca search. German oothecae appear on the underside of cabinet shelves, behind kick plates, inside hinge pockets — light-brown, 9 mm. American oothecae appear at the base of exterior walls or near sewer vents — reddish-brown, 8 mm, glued in place.
-
Smell check. A sweet musty smell inside kitchen cabinets is the German cockroach aggregation pheromone — a strong positive ID.
-
Treatment recommendation. We write the species ID and proposed treatment onto a one-page job sheet — every product, every placement zone, every revisit date. The client keeps a copy. Full protocol detail is in the complete cockroach control guide.
Where both species are present (more common than people expect — see the FAQ), we map the home into zones and apply species-appropriate chemistry per zone. No gel bait near American cockroach migration drains. No residual spray inside a German cockroach kitchen.
Section 5: Two Less Common Cockroaches You Might See in Karachi
The two species above account for roughly 90% of Karachi infestations. Two more turn up often enough to be worth knowing.
Brownbanded Cockroach (Supella longipalpa)
Medium-sized, around 10-14 mm, light brown with two pale banded markings across the wings. Prefers dry, warm zones rather than the humid kitchen environment that German cockroach favors. We see brownbanded cockroach most often in Clifton high-rise apartments where they live behind picture frames, inside electronics (TV cabinets, microwave electronics, desktop computers), and inside ceiling light fixtures.
Distribution within a home is wider than German cockroach — they don't cluster as tightly, and you'll find them spread across multiple rooms rather than concentrated in the kitchen. Treatment is gel bait plus an insect growth regulator, with multiple placements across all affected rooms rather than concentrated near a single harborage.
Oriental Cockroach (Blatta orientalis)
Shiny black, 25-30 mm, with a heavy slow gait that distinguishes it from the faster American cockroach. Prefers cool, damp, dark zones — basements, ground-floor washrooms, water-tank rooms, and under-sink cabinets in older PECHS and North Nazimabad bungalows where moisture management is poor.
Slower-reproducing than the other three species. Treatment is residual perimeter spray combined with moisture management (fix the leak, ventilate the basement) and drain treatment. Sometimes confused with American cockroach because of the size — the color difference (matte black vs. glossy reddish-brown) is the easy tell.
When DIY ID Goes Wrong (Real Karachi Examples)
A few anonymized field examples from the past year.
A client in Clifton Block 2 — ground-floor apartment — had been treating "kitchen roaches" with shop spray nightly for four months. On inspection we identified the species as American cockroach, not German. They were migrating up through a broken floor-drain grate in the kitchen that the homeowner had never noticed under a mat. Wrong species, wrong chemistry. We replaced the drain grate, applied K-Othrine residual at the drain perimeter and the adjacent sewer vent, and the issue resolved within two weeks of one visit.
A restaurant in PECHS had been spraying the prep area nightly with a pyrethroid for six weeks against German cockroach. By the time they called us, the colony had scattered from the original under-sink cluster into four distinct satellite harborages — behind the cold-storage unit, inside the fryer cabinet base, in the wall void behind the prep counter, and inside the exhaust hood housing. Multi-point Advion gel placement at all four sites plus boric acid puffer in the wall void plus a methoprene IGR zeroed the colony in 28 days.
A North Nazimabad household sprayed under the kitchen sink for three weeks. The German cockroach colony moved overnight into the bathroom wall void on the other side of the same pipe chase. Same fix: stop spraying, deploy gel bait at all newly-mapped harborages, allow 21 days for the cascade.
What You Can Do Before Calling a Pro
A short list of things that will not make the problem worse, and may help us when we arrive.
If you suspect German cockroach (small, tan, in the kitchen):
- Do not spray. This is the most important single instruction.
- Vacuum dry crumbs and food residue from cabinet seams, behind the toaster, under the stove. Reducing competing food sources makes our gel bait more attractive.
- Check the underside of every cabinet door and the underside of every shelf for the characteristic pepper-grain frass.
- If you find an ootheca, take a photo — don't crush it. The photo helps us confirm species and severity.
If you suspect American cockroach (large, reddish-brown, near drains):
- Pour a kettle of boiling water down the affected floor drain. This kills surface-layer nymphs and partially disrupts the biofilm. It is not a long-term fix but it reduces nightly traffic until we arrive.
- Cover the drain at night with a weighted cover (a heavy ceramic plate works fine).
- Don't leave garbage bags near a sewer vent overnight.
- Inspect the exterior compound wall base for mud-like trails. American cockroach doesn't make trails like that, but termites do, and if you see anything resembling mud tubes, flag it to us. We do termite inspections as part of our all pest control services.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can both species be in the same house?+
Yes, more often than people expect — especially in older PECHS and Bahadurabad bungalows with poor drain integrity. Ground-floor units near sewers commonly have American cockroach in the washroom and drain zones AND German cockroach in the kitchen. We treat both with the right chemistry per zone: gel bait for the kitchen harborages, residual spray plus bio-drain treatment for the sewer perimeter. Same visit, two different protocols.
What about the small light-brown roach I see at night?+
Almost certainly German cockroach. Size confirms — 12 to 15 mm. The two parallel dark bands behind the head are the giveaway. If it's running on the kitchen counter or visible inside a cabinet during the day, the colony is overcrowded and you should act sooner rather than later.
What about the big reddish-brown one in the bathroom?+
American cockroach. Coming up through the floor drain or a sewer vent. Check the drain grate integrity first, then plan a residual perimeter treatment at the drain edge. One sighting per week is foraging; one sighting per night is active migration.
Is one species more dangerous than the other?+
Both carry pathogens. American cockroach is the worse raw-pathogen vector — Salmonella, Shigella, E. coli picked up from sewers and tracked across kitchen surfaces. German cockroach is the worse allergen vector. Bla g 1 and Bla g 2 proteins in their droppings are documented major triggers for childhood asthma, chronic rhinitis, and atopic eczema. German cockroach is worse for hygiene; American is worse for direct disease load. Both warrant treatment.
Do cockroach allergens really cause asthma?+
Yes. Bla g 1 and Bla g 2 from German cockroach droppings are among the most documented indoor allergens in pediatric asthma research worldwide. Karachi homes with an active German cockroach infestation and a child with asthma or eczema should treat the infestation as a health priority, not a comfort issue.
Can I just use boric acid powder?+
Genuine boric acid powder — 99% pure, not the consumer-grade roach powder cut with talc and other fillers — does work, slowly. We use it inside wall voids via a hand-puffer applicator as a residual layer after the gel-bait cascade has done the primary work. As a sole DIY treatment, it kills slowly (6 to 12 days) and is much less complete than IPM with non-repellent gel bait. Worth pairing with professional service, not replacing it.
How fast do the gel baits work?+
Indoxacarb (Advion) produces visible reduction within 5 to 10 days and near-zero colony activity by day 21 for typical residential German cockroach jobs. Fipronil (Goliath) is faster — 3 to 7 days for primary mortality, and we often rotate the two products to manage resistance. American cockroach residual spray produces 24 to 72 hour visible knockdown of cockroaches currently inside the building, but does not prevent next-week migration unless paired with the bio-drain treatment.
Is gel bait safe with toddlers in the kitchen?+
Indoxacarb has an oral LD50 in rats of approximately 1,730 mg/kg — meaningfully lower mammalian toxicity than caffeine. Our placement protocol puts every gel drop under cabinet hinges, behind appliances, or on the underside of surfaces — never on counter tops, floors, or any toddler-reachable horizontal surface. We document every placement with a photo log and a labeled diagram so families know exactly where each drop is.
