Water Tank Cleaning in North Nazimabad Karachi: Block A-T — Ageing Galvanised Tanks, Low Pressure, Dengue-Zone Larviciding

North Nazimabad is one of Karachi’s older planned neighbourhoods, and the tanks reflect that. Across Block A to Block T we still open galvanised steel tanks installed decades ago, sitting on bungalow roofs that were built before polyethylene was the default. Those tanks need a different hand than the Dura and Nexa units we work on in newer areas — a stiff brush strips what is left of the zinc layer and accelerates the corrosion you were trying to stop. Add supply that arrives on a rota rather than continuously, so water sits for days between fills, and North Nazimabad’s standing as a recurring dengue [1] zone, and the job here is genuinely its own thing. Three things that shape a North Nazimabad tank job

Ageing galvanised steel tanks, not just steel pipes. Newer areas have polyethylene almost universally. Here a large share of the original bungalow stock still runs galvanised steel overheads. Galvanised steel is mild steel with a sacrificial zinc coating; the zinc protects the steel until it is worn or scrubbed away, after which the tank corrodes from the inside and puts ferric particulate straight into the supply. That is why we go in with soft-bristle brushes on every steel tank, and why we inspect the seams and the base weld before we scrub rather than afterwards. If a tank is perforating we tell you it needs replacing — cleaning a failing steel tank buys you months, not years.

Rota supply means long residence time. Much of North Nazimabad receives KWSB mains on a schedule rather than continuously, and upper floors often see poor pressure even when supply is on. Households compensate by filling hard and drawing down slowly, which means water can sit in the tank for the better part of a week. Long residence is what allows any free-chlorine residual to decay to zero, and once it does, biofilm growth on the walls is unconstrained. It is also why the earthy or musty taste people report here is usually algal or biofilm-related rather than anything arriving in the mains.

It is a documented dengue area. North Nazimabad appears repeatedly in Sindh Health Department surveillance as a recurring hot zone, which changes what a tank clean has to accomplish between June and October. A roof tank with a gapped lid is not a minor housekeeping issue in this neighbourhood — it is a breeding site inside a transmission cluster. The 5-stage protocol, adapted for steel

Same five stages we run everywhere. The adaptations here are brush selection, corrosion inspection, and a heavier weight on larval control.

Stage 1 — Pre-inspection, corrosion check and larval survey. Lid off, interior photographed, and on steel tanks a deliberate look at the seams, the base weld and the outlet collar for perforation or heavy scaling. From June to October we add a directed Aedes aegypti [1] larval survey — a torch at the waterline shows comma-shaped larvae or short tumbling pupae if eggs went in during the last 7-10 days. In a dengue zone we also check the roof itself: discarded containers, a blocked parapet drain and an uncovered overhead cistern are all breeding sites, and treating the tank while leaving those is pointless.

Stage 2 — Drain and sediment removal. Outlet plus submersible pump, then wet vacuum on overheads and manual scoop with a suction line on sumps. In a steel tank the settle is typically rust-red and gritty rather than the soft grey silt of a tanker-fed sump, and the volume tells you how long it has been. A 1,000-gallon steel overhead untouched for two years will commonly give up several litres of ferric sediment. We photograph it before disposal.

Stage 3 — Soft-brush scrub and chelation. Mechanical removal is still the only way to break wall biofilm, because the polymer matrix Pseudomonas aeruginosa builds consumes free chlorine at the surface and shields the layers beneath. On galvanised steel that has to be done with soft-bristle brushes and controlled pressure so the remaining zinc survives the cleaning. Rust staining and any mineral rim come off with a dilute citric acid or sodium citrate pass — chelating agents bind ferric, calcium and magnesium ions and lift the deposit without the aggressive scrubbing that would strip the coating. Heavy biofilm gets peracetic acid at 500-1,000 ppm.

Stage 4 — Sanitization at 200 ppm. Sodium hypochlorite at 200 ppm available chlorine, from 5-6% NaOCl at roughly 1:280, across every interior surface with a 30-minute minimum dwell. Broad-spectrum against E. coli, total coliforms, Pseudomonas and algal spores. Dosing is measured against actual volume rather than estimated — a 1,000-gallon (3,785 L) overhead needs 757 g of available chlorine, which is 15.1 L of 5% NaOCl, measured in a graduated cylinder. On steel we keep to the 30-minute dwell rather than extending it, because prolonged high-chlorine contact is itself corrosive.

Stage 5 — Bti tablet, lid reseal and overflow screening. After rinse and refill to a 0.2 ppm residual, a Bacillus thuringiensis israelensis tablet goes into every overhead from May to November. Bti Cry endotoxins bind to Aedes aegypti mid-gut receptors and kill larvae within 24-48 hours; WHO Class III, non-toxic to humans, mammals and fish at potable dosing. One tablet per 1,000 litres for around 30 days. Then the lid is resealed with a new gasket if the old one has hardened, and the overflow pipe is fitted with a mesh cap if it does not have one — on older North Nazimabad roofs it usually does not, and an open overflow is a direct entry route for a gravid female.

Steel, polyethylene and sumps — what changes

Galvanised steel overheads. Soft brush only, seam and base-weld inspection before scrubbing, standard 30-minute hypochlorite dwell with no extension, and an honest verdict at the end. If we find perforation, active leaking at a seam, or scaling heavy enough that the wall thickness is in question, we say the tank is near end of life. Cleaning it is still worth doing in the meantime, but you should be budgeting for a polyethylene replacement rather than expecting another decade.

Polyethylene overheads. Newer North Nazimabad builds and most replacements are 500-1,500 gallon Dura or Nexa. Smooth, non-porous, easiest to sanitise, stiff brush is fine. If the tank is translucent and sitting in direct sun, expect algal growth — light plus warmth drives it, and the fix is shading or over-painting rather than more frequent cleaning.

Underground sumps. Where a bungalow has one, it is upstream of the roof tank and has to be cleaned in the same visit or the booster pump re-seeds what you just cleaned. Confined-space protocol is not negotiable: gas check before entry because concrete accumulates CO2 and depletes oxygen, forced ventilation for 15-20 minutes, 12V lighting, a spotter at the manhole throughout, breathing apparatus on standby. Sediment volumes run two to four times an equivalent rooftop.

What a typical North Nazimabad job looks like

A typical Block H or Block L bungalow. The call is usually about taste — an earthy or musty flavour that is worse first thing in the morning, which is the signature of biofilm and algal growth in a tank that sits full for days between fills. What we generally find is an original galvanised overhead with a rust-red settle, a soft biofilm layer on the walls, a hardened lid gasket and no mesh on the overflow. Soft-brush scrub, citrate pass to lift the rust staining, 30-minute hypochlorite dwell, Bti tablet, new gasket, mesh cap on the overflow. Two to three hours for a single tank; four to six if there is a sump underneath.

A monsoon larval call near Hyderi. Between July and October the trigger changes. Someone sees movement in a stored bucket or in the tank itself, and by then the roof usually has more than one breeding site — the tank plus a parapet drain holding water plus an old cistern nobody uses. The tank clean proceeds normally, but the roof gets treated as a unit under our mosquito control protocol, standing water is cleared or drained, the overflow is screened and a Bti tablet goes in on refill. A Day 14 follow-up confirms whether it held, which in a documented dengue zone is worth the extra visit.

My tank is old galvanised steel. Can it be cleaned safely?

Yes, with soft-bristle brushes and controlled pressure. The zinc coating on galvanised steel is sacrificial — it protects the steel underneath until it is worn or scrubbed off, and an aggressive clean removes the very thing keeping the tank alive. We use soft brushes, keep the hypochlorite dwell to 30 minutes rather than extending it, and lift rust staining with citrate chelation instead of abrasion. We also inspect the seams and base weld first and tell you honestly if the tank is close to end of life.

Our water tastes earthy or musty. What causes that?

Almost always biofilm or algal growth inside the tank rather than anything arriving in the mains. It is the predictable outcome of rota supply: the tank is filled hard and then drawn down slowly over several days, the free-chlorine residual decays to nothing during that residence time, and wall growth proceeds unchecked. Translucent tanks in direct sun make it worse because light drives algae. A mechanical scrub plus a 200 ppm hypochlorite dwell resolves it; shading a sun-exposed tank keeps it away longer.

How does the dengue risk here change what you do?

How often should I clean the tank here?

Four to five months for most North Nazimabad addresses, against the 6-month floor we publish Karachi-wide. Rota supply and long residence time are the reason — the chlorine residual is gone well before the next fill, so growth restarts sooner than it would on a constant feed. Older steel tanks benefit from the tighter interval as well, because sediment sitting against a corroding wall accelerates it.

Is the water safe to drink afterwards?

Yes, with the standard steps. Hypochlorite at 200 ppm breaks down to chloride and water during the rinse, and the refill carries a 0.2 ppm residual, which is the WHO distribution guideline. Peracetic acid decomposes to acetic acid, oxygen and water within hours. Bti is WHO Class III and the citrate chelators are food-grade. Flush every tap for two minutes the next morning, keep the geyser off for 30 minutes, and run 15 litres through an RO unit before drinking.
