The expensive failure in curtain cleaning is not a stain that would not come out. It is a nine-foot drop that comes back eight foot eight. Shrinkage is irreversible, it is invisible until the curtain is re-hung, and it is caused almost entirely by putting a fibre through a process it cannot take, which means the decision that matters is made before anything is taken down, not during the clean. In DHA that decision comes up constantly, because Defence drawing rooms run long, heavy, lined drapes on tall windows and a lot of them are linen, silk blends or interlined, all of which move. This page covers how we make that call, alongside our Karachi-wide curtain and blinds cleaning service.

Why curtains shrink, and which ones do it

The mechanism. Woven fabric is held under tension during manufacture. Introduce water and heat and the fibres relax and the weave draws in — the yarn takes up its natural crimp and the panel loses length. Natural fibres do this far more than synthetics because they absorb water into the fibre itself rather than just holding it between the yarns. Once the weave has relaxed, ironing stretches it back only temporarily.

The high-risk group. Linen and linen blends, cotton that has not been pre-shrunk, silk and silk blends, rayon and viscose, and wool. Interlined drapes are their own category — three layers with different shrink rates bonded into one panel, so even modest shrinkage puts the layers out of register and the curtain hangs with a rippled face and a twisted leading edge.

The low-risk group. Polyester and polyester blends, which is the majority of modern ready-made curtains. These are dimensionally stable in water and can generally be washed, steamed on-site or laundered without drama.

Blackout and coated linings are a separate problem. Many blackout curtains achieve opacity with an acrylic or foam coating bonded to the back of the fabric. Heat and agitation crack or delaminate that coating, and once it flakes the curtain is finished. These get a dry, low-heat process or nothing at all, and if a previous cleaner has already cracked the coating we say so rather than pretending a re-clean will help.

On-site or off-site: how we decide

Every job starts with the care label where there is one, and a fibre burn test on a hidden hem thread where there is not, plus a colourfastness test on a concealed section. Three outcomes follow.

On-site dry steam and extraction — curtains stay hung. Suitable for dimensionally stable fabrics that mainly need dust and surface soil removed. HEPA vacuum along the full drop, both faces and into the header pleats, then controlled dry steam with immediate extraction. Nothing comes down, nothing is re-hung, no shrinkage risk, and the room is back in use the same day. This is the right answer for most polyester drapes and it is what we do most often.

Off-site dry cleaning — taken down, tagged, returned and re-hung. The correct route for linen, silk, wool, viscose, interlined drapes and anything with a coated blackout lining. Solvent does not swell the fibre, so it does not shrink the panel. Every curtain is tagged by window before it leaves, and re-hanging is part of the job rather than something we leave you to arrange.

Washable — we will tell you to do it yourself. Plenty of DHA households have simple unlined polyester or cotton-poly panels that will go through a domestic machine perfectly well on a cool cycle. Where that is the case we say so. It is not worth paying anyone for a service you can do in a washing machine, and we would rather clean the sofa and the blinds while you handle the curtains.

Blinds — the material decides everything

Aluminium venetians. The most forgiving. Ultrasonic or wet cleaning both work, slats come up genuinely clean, and the only real care point is the head rail mechanism and the ladder cords, which should not be soaked.

Wooden and faux-wood venetians. Real wood must never be wet-cleaned. Water raises the grain, warps the slat and lifts the lacquer, and a warped slat will not sit flat again. These get a dry process — vacuum, dry-sponge and a barely-damp wipe with immediate drying. Faux-wood is a PVC composite and tolerates water, but the two look nearly identical once installed, so we check rather than assume. Getting this wrong costs the customer a whole blind.

Fabric verticals and rollers. Vertical louvres are usually a stiffened polyester that wicks readily, so they are cleaned with low moisture and dried flat rather than re-hung wet — a wet louvre stretches under its own weight and ends up longer than its neighbours. Roller blinds are frequently coated or stiffened, and aggressive wet cleaning strips the stiffener and leaves the fabric limp and rippled.

Honeycomb and pleated blinds. The cell structure traps dust and is easily crushed. Compressed air and gentle vacuum, never brushing, and never wet — water collapses the cells and they do not recover.

What sea air does in the coastal phases

Properties in Phase 8, along Seaview and on the streets closest to the water take a continuous salt aerosol load, and it behaves differently from ordinary dust. Salt is hygroscopic — it pulls moisture out of humid air, so the deposit on a window dressing does not stay dry. It holds a film of damp against whatever it is sitting on.

On blind mechanisms that means corrosion. Head rails, tilt mechanisms, cord locks and the steel components inside vertical blind carriers seize and pit in sea-facing rooms far faster than they do inland. When we service blinds in those phases we clean and check the mechanism, not just the slats — a spotless blind that will not tilt is not a finished job. Where a mechanism has already failed we say it needs replacing rather than cleaning it and handing it back.

On fabric it means faster resoiling and a damp-holding layer. Salt-laden dust in a curtain header keeps a slightly damp microclimate near the top of the drop, which is exactly where mildew starts on a lined curtain. It is one of the reasons sea-facing homes benefit from a shorter interval than the rest of DHA, and why we look at the header and the lining, not just the visible face.

Take-down, tagging and re-hang

On tall Defence windows this is genuinely the risky part of the job, and it is where most damage actually happens, not during cleaning. Heavy interlined drapes on a long track are awkward and heavy, and pulling them down carelessly bends track carriers, tears header tape and pulls hooks through the buckram.

We photograph each window before anything comes down, tag every panel by room and window, remove hooks and rings and bag them by panel, and check the track and carriers while the window is bare, which is the only sensible moment to notice a sticking carrier or a loose bracket. Re-hang is included, panels go back on the window they came from, and drapes are dressed into their pleats and left to hang so the folds set properly rather than being pushed back and left creased.

Dust, allergen and the curtain’s real role

A full-length lined curtain is a large vertical dust trap sitting in the airflow of a room, and in a closed air-conditioned house that dust recirculates every time the curtain is drawn. It holds the same material as the rest of the soft furnishings — skin cells, fine outdoor dust and dust-mite allergen, and it is the one most households never think to clean.

For allergy households the useful order is mattress first, then sofa, then curtains, because that is the order of reservoir size. Doing all three in one visit is both cheaper and more effective than doing them a year apart, since a cleaned mattress in a room with heavily loaded curtains is re-exposed every time the drapes move. See mattress cleaning in DHA and sofa cleaning in DHA.

Pricing

Curtains are quoted per panel on drop, lining and fibre, because a 9-foot interlined silk drape and a 5-foot unlined polyester panel are not the same job. Blinds are quoted per blind on type and width. We give you the figure after the fibre test and the window count, not before — an estimate given over the phone without knowing whether your drapes are linen or polyester is a guess, and it is the guess that turns into an argument on the day.

Take-down, tagging, re-hang and dressing are included rather than added. Bundling with sofa cleaning, carpet cleaning or a full house deep clean reduces the combined job, and it is the sensible way to book it — the team is already in the room and the furniture is already moved. Booking, and what happens on the day

WhatsApp +92-311-1101810 with the number of windows, roughly how tall the drops are, and a photo of the care label sewn into a hem if there is one. The label photo is the single most useful thing you can send — it usually decides on-site versus off-site before anyone travels. Add your DHA phase and street. Confirmation inside 30 minutes during business hours, Mon-Sat 09:30-20:00, and DHA is 5-20 minutes from our Phase 4 office.

The team arrives with HEPA vacuums, a controlled dry steam unit with extraction, dry-sponge and compressed air for blinds, ladders, tagging materials and PPE. Clear anything fragile from the window sills and console tables underneath; we handle the curtains, the track and the ladders. On-site work is typically half a day for a full floor. Off-site work is taken away tagged and returned with re-hanging on an agreed date, and we confirm that date before anything leaves the house.

Common questions

Which DHA phases do you cover?

All phases, plus Clifton and the Khayaban corridors, at the same rates. We are in Phase 4, so most Defence addresses are 5 to 20 minutes away and same-day slots are usually available for on-site work.

Will my curtains shrink?

Not if the process matches the fibre, which is the whole reason we test before deciding. Linen, silk, wool, viscose, un-pre-shrunk cotton and interlined drapes go off-site for dry cleaning specifically because solvent does not swell the fibre. Polyester is dimensionally stable and can be steamed in place. Shrinkage happens when someone puts a natural fibre through a water process to save the cost of the solvent route.

Do the curtains have to come down?

Usually not. Most modern polyester drapes are cleaned in place with HEPA vacuuming and controlled dry steam, which means no take-down, no re-hang and the room stays usable. Taking them down is reserved for fabrics that need solvent, for heavy soiling that on-site work will not resolve, and for anything with a damaged or mildewed lining that needs to be seen flat.

Can you clean wooden blinds?

Yes, dry. Real wooden slats must not be wet-cleaned — water raises the grain, warps the slat and lifts the lacquer, and a warped slat never sits flat again. We use vacuum, dry-sponge and a barely-damp wipe with immediate drying. Faux-wood looks almost identical but is a PVC composite and does tolerate water, so we identify which you have before starting rather than assuming.

How often should curtains be cleaned?

Every 12 to 18 months for most DHA households, and every 6 to 12 months in the sea-facing phases, in rooms that open onto a main road, or where somebody has a dust allergy. Blinds benefit from more frequent light servicing than curtains because the slats sit horizontally and collect dust faster.

There are black spots on the bottom of our curtain lining. Is that mould?

Usually, and it usually means condensation running down the glass and wicking into the hem, or a window that leaks in monsoon. Cleaning lifts the surface growth, but if the water source is still there it comes back within a season. We will tell you where the moisture is coming from, because that is the actual fix — see our post-monsoon damp and mould cleaning page.
