Mosquito Control in DHA Karachi: Phase-by-Phase — Source Reduction, Bti Larviciding, Permethrin Barrier Treatment

Most mosquito complaints in DHA get answered with a fogging machine, and fogging on its own is close to the least useful thing you can do. A cold fog kills the adults flying at the moment it passes through, and nothing else — it does not touch the larvae in your plant saucers, it leaves no residue on the surfaces the next generation will rest on, and within a week you are back where you started. What actually works in a DHA bungalow is finding and removing the water they are breeding in, treating what cannot be removed, and putting a residual barrier on the surfaces adults rest on. Fogging has a role, but it is the last step and the least important one. This page explains the sequence we use across Phase 1 to Phase 8, alongside our Karachi-wide mosquito control service.

Know which mosquito you have — it changes everything

Three genera matter in DHA, and they breed in different water, bite at different times and need different treatment.

Aedes aegypti [1] — the dengue vector. A container breeder. It wants small volumes of clean, still water: plant saucers, the tray under an AC condenser, a bucket in the servant quarters, an uncovered roof tank, a blocked parapet drain, the base of a decorative fountain. It bites during the day, with peaks in the early morning and late afternoon, and it does not fly far — typically within 100 to 200 metres of where it emerged. That last fact matters more than any other: if you are being bitten by Aedes during the day, it hatched on your property or your immediate neighbour’s, not somewhere across DHA.

Culex — the night biter. Breeds in organically polluted water: open drains, soakage pits, sullage channels, a neglected swimming pool that has gone green. This is the one whining around the bedroom at night. It is a nuisance biter in Karachi rather than a major disease vector, but it is the commonest complaint we get from Phase 5, 6 and 7 addresses backing onto open drains.

Anopheles — the malaria vector. Prefers cleaner standing ground water and is more of an issue near undeveloped plots and the creek-side edges of the newer phases. Lower prevalence here than Aedes or Culex, but worth identifying correctly because the breeding sites are different again.

Where DHA properties actually breed mosquitoes

DHA bungalows have more breeding habitat than a flat does, and almost all of it is invisible until someone looks properly.

Landscaping and pot saucers. The single most common Aedes site we find. A saucer under a potted plant holds enough water indefinitely if it is watered every few days, and a well-kept DHA garden can have thirty or forty of them. Bromeliads and other plants that hold water in the leaf axils do the same job.

AC condensate trays and drip points. Split units drip continuously through summer. Where the drip lands in a tray, a drain that does not fall properly, or a depression in the paving, it produces exactly the clean still water Aedes wants, and it is replenished daily, so it never dries out.

Roof tanks and overhead cisterns. An uncovered or badly sealed roof tank is a large, warm, undisturbed breeding reservoir. We treat this as part of the same problem — if we find larvae during a mosquito visit we recommend a proper tank clean, and our water tank cleaning in DHA pairs a Bti tablet with the reseal for exactly this reason.

Swimming pools out of commission. A pool that has stopped being circulated becomes a very large breeding site within days. Half-drained pools during renovation are worse, because the shallow warm remainder is ideal.

Boundary drains and neighbouring plots. Culex comes from organic-rich water, and in Phase 6, 7 and 8 that frequently means the drain outside the wall or an undeveloped plot next door holding water after rain. We can treat your side of the wall; we will also tell you honestly when the source is beyond it, because that is a conversation with the neighbour or the DHA authority rather than something more spraying will fix.

The treatment sequence, in order of what actually works

Step 1. Survey and source reduction. We walk the property with the owner or the mali and find the water. Saucers emptied, condensate redirected, buckets inverted, parapet and balcony drains cleared, tyres and unused containers removed, roof checked. Nothing else on this list works as well as taking the water away, and it costs nothing but attention.

Step 2. Larviciding what cannot be removed. Ornamental ponds, fountains, sumps, drains and roof tanks stay wet by design. Those get treated. Bacillus thuringiensis israelensis (Bti) is the first choice for anything near potable water or fish — its Cry endotoxins bind to mosquito larval mid-gut receptors and kill within 24 to 48 hours, and it is WHO Class III, non-toxic to humans, mammals and fish at label dosing. For drains and non-potable standing water we use temephos, or an insect growth regulator such as pyriproxyfen or methoprene, which prevents larvae from developing into adults rather than killing them outright.

Step 3. Residual barrier treatment. This is the step that gives you weeks rather than days. Permethrin 10% EC applied to the surfaces adults actually rest on — the underside of dense foliage, shaded boundary walls, the back of the garage, under-eave surfaces, the shaded planting along the drive. Mosquitoes spend most of their life resting rather than flying, so a residual on the resting surface reaches far more of the population than any amount of space spray.

Step 4 — ULV space spray, if it is warranted. Deltamethrin 1.25% ULV knocks down the adults currently flying. It is genuinely useful when you need immediate relief — before an event, or when an infestation is heavy and the household cannot wait for the barrier to do its work. It is not a control programme, and any operator selling monthly fogging as mosquito control is selling you a recurring symptom treatment. Our fuller comparison is on fogging vs larviciding.

Step 5 — Follow-up at day 14. The mosquito life cycle from egg to adult runs roughly 7 to 10 days in Karachi summer temperatures. A day-14 revisit catches anything that hatched from eggs already laid before the first treatment, which is why single visits during peak season disappoint people.

What a typical DHA job looks like

A typical Phase 6 garden bungalow, daytime biting. Daytime biting points at Aedes before we arrive, which means container breeding on the property. What we generally find is a cluster of plant saucers, one or two AC drip points feeding a permanently wet patch, and often a roof tank with a gapped lid. The work is mostly source reduction plus Bti in the ornamental pond and the tank, then a Permethrin barrier through the shaded planting and along the boundary wall. Two to three hours, with a day-14 revisit booked at the same time.

A typical Phase 7 night-biting complaint. Night biting and a whining note in the bedroom is Culex, and the source is usually organic water rather than clean containers — a boundary drain, a soakage pit, or a pool that has stopped circulating. Treatment leans on larviciding the drain and a residual barrier on the wall and shaded exterior surfaces. Where the drain is outside the boundary we say so plainly, treat what we can reach, and explain that the sustainable fix is upstream of the property.

Booking, and what happens on the day

That one detail tells us which genus we are dealing with and what to load. Price band and slot confirmed inside 30 minutes during business hours, Mon-Sat 09:00-21:00. Our office is in Phase 4, so most DHA addresses are 10-20 minutes away and same-day is normal.

A two-person team arrives with a survey kit, Bti and temephos larvicides, IGR, Permethrin 10% EC for the barrier, a ULV machine if space spray is part of the scope, and PPE. Expect two to three hours for a standard bungalow. Keep children and pets indoors during application and for two hours after; cover or remove fish bowls and pet water; harvest any ripe vegetables from the kitchen garden beforehand. Barrier surfaces should not be washed down for at least a week, because washing removes the residue you paid for. DHA-specific questions

Will fogging alone solve my mosquito problem?

No, and we would rather say so before taking your money than after. A ULV fog kills the adults airborne at the moment it passes through and leaves no residue behind. The eggs and larvae in your plant saucers, drains and roof tank are untouched, and with a 7 to 10 day egg-to-adult cycle in Karachi summer you have a fresh population inside a fortnight. Fogging is useful for immediate knockdown before an event or during a heavy infestation. Control comes from source reduction, larviciding and a residual barrier.

I am being bitten during the day. What does that mean?

Day biting, particularly early morning and late afternoon, points to Aedes aegypti — the dengue vector. It matters because Aedes is a container breeder with a flight range of only about 100 to 200 metres, so it almost certainly emerged on your property or your immediate neighbour’s. That makes a thorough container survey the highest-value thing we can do, and it is why we walk the garden and roof with you rather than starting with a spray.

Is the treatment safe around children, pets and a kitchen garden?

Yes, with the standard precautions. Bti is WHO Class III and non-toxic to humans, mammals and fish at label dosing, which is why it is our first choice near ponds and potable water. Permethrin is applied as a residual to resting surfaces rather than broadcast over planting, and IGRs act on insect development pathways. Keep children and pets indoors during application and for two hours after, cover fish tanks and ornamental ponds unless we are dosing them deliberately with Bti, and harvest ripe vegetables before we arrive.

How long before I notice a difference, and how long does it last?

If ULV is part of the visit, immediately for the adults flying at that moment. The meaningful reduction comes over the following one to two weeks as the barrier works on resting adults and the larvicides stop the next generation emerging. A properly executed treatment with source reduction holds for four to six weeks in peak season, longer outside it. Rain shortens it, because it washes barrier residue off exterior surfaces and refills every container you emptied — after heavy monsoon rain, expect to need a top-up.

The mosquitoes are coming from the drain outside my wall. Can you treat that?

We treat what is on your property and we will larvicide an accessible boundary drain. What we will not do is pretend that repeated spraying on your side solves a breeding site on the other side of the wall or on an undeveloped neighbouring plot. Where that is the situation we document it, treat your boundary as a barrier, and tell you it needs raising with the neighbour or with the DHA authority. That is a more useful answer than a monthly fogging contract.

Do you cover all DHA phases?

Phase 1 through Phase 8, plus Zamzama, Khayaban-e-Ittehad, Khayaban-e-Bukhari and the Creek-side developments, at identical published rates. Our office is on 2nd Gizri Street in Phase 4, so Phase 1-5 is usually 10-15 minutes and Phase 6-8 is 20-30. Same-day is the norm during business hours.
